February 3 2011. Steve Jobs is expected to unveil the anticipated Verizon iPhone at a New York event three days from now, on January 11, and we guess Apple and Verizon Wireless will start taking pre-orders as early as next week. That is, unless the companies are planning to skip pre-ordering altogether and make February 3 a day remembered for complete in-store chaos.

The Verizon iPhone is the most hyped product launch in the history of smartphones, perhaps with the exception of some Nokia N9x series smartphones in the early days of multimedia smartphones. AT&T recently announced that the iPhone 3GS, a smartphone that will continue to be exclusively available for AT&T, will now cost $50 with a new two-year contract.

This is a move that is believed to be directly related to the imminent Verizon iPhone release - which will be of the higher-end iPhone 4 kind. The iPhone has a strong mainstream appeal, and AT&T hopes that a cheap iPhone 3GS coupled with a $15/month data plan will make average Joe think twice about signing up for a Verizon iPhone 4 with a more expensive data plan.

It remains to be seen what the Verizon iPhone 4 will be like. It's not the exact same model as the GSM iPhone 4, but it really depends on how Apple has built it. If you ask us, there's a pretty good chance that the Verizon iPhone to be released on February 3 will offer several similar hardware parts as the Samsung Fascinate.

In fact, there's a pretty good chance that Samsung has played the key role in actually enabling a Verizon iPhone 4 release altogether. We could be totally wrong here, but we guess we'll find out as soon as someone gets hold of a unit and tears it apart. Will there be "Apple-branded Samsung parts" all over the place? That will be the question to be answered next month.
